The community itself is anchored by a 110-acre park in its center. The area was formed long ago by a 500-foot thick glacier, which moved slowly through the valley forming the characteristic U-shaped basins. The park today consists of winding nature trails, a softball field, and a playground. Horshoe Park is a great retreat for any nature lover, hiker, bird watcher, or picnicker.
Horshoe is also known for its elk population. In the late 1800s this animal was excessively hunted and reduced to only a handful. The population today is close to 3,000. Elk herds are often seen gathering in the park during the early morning hours and late in the afternoon. Other wildlife in the park are black bear, deer, coyote, bighorn sheep, bobcat, and moose.
Just to the northeast of Horshoe Park resides Buckley Air Force Base, which hosts the 460th Space Wing, a unit of the U.S Air Force Space Command.
Just to the southwest of Horshoe Park, is Cherry Creek Lake and Dam. This dam was the first of three that were built to protect Denver from the horrific South Platte River floodwaters that plagued the area for years. Today this area offers many attractions beyond the normal hiking and fishing. Visitors here can use the archery and rifle range, visit the horse stable, take a stop at the model airplane strip, and check out the marina. Cherry Creek Lake and Dam is open year round.
