The City Park West neighborhood, more commonly known as Uptown, lies adjacent to the southwest corner of City Park and is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. Residents of this neighborhood can enjoy many of the city’s major parks, yet still have convenient access to downtown Denver.
When the 330-acre City Park was first constructed in 1880, it was surrounded by fields and lay a mile away from Denver proper. Residential development began in earnest around the turn of the century, with the construction of convenient trolley lines out to City Park. Today, City Park West or Uptown, is a mix of two-story brick Denver Squares, single-story bungalows, duplexes, and apartment buildings.
City Park West lies within the 80218 zip code and is bordered by East 23rd Avenue to the north, Downing Street to the west, East Colfax Avenue to the south, and York Street to the east. Popular shopping, dining, and entertainment spots are just steps away along Colfax Avenue.
Sports fans are almost overwhelmed with local sporting event choices. Football fans can watch the Denver Broncos at Invesco Field at Mile High, while baseball fans can catch a game at Coors Field. Hockey and basketball fans can enjoy the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets games at the Pepsi Center.
Residents of City Park West can play at one of two nearby city parks. City Park, the jewel of Denver’s park system, offers golfing at the City Park Municipal Course, paddle boats on Ferril Lake, animal exhibits at the Denver Zoo, and science exhibits at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Nearby Cheesman Park is popular for its jogging paths, while gardeners can glean ideas at the Denver Botanic Gardens.
