The Arvada Plaza Area is located north east of downtown Denver, in Jefferson County. The area is roughly bordered by West 58th on the north, Carr Street and Garrison Street on the east, Interstate 70 on the south and Miller and Oak Streets on the west. It is part of Jefferson County. The area is a mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings. The Arvada Plaza Shopping Center, built in the 1960s and now known as Ralston Plaza, offers many shopping and dining options. Jack B. Tomlinson Park, once known as Birdland Park, was renamed after the death of one of Arvada’s contributors and former city council member. Tomlinson was named Man-of-the-Year in 1960 for his work with youth groups and the park’s gazebo was dedicated to him in 1989. Tomlinson Park is eleven acres, complete with playground, picnic tables, bike/pedestrian path and the two acre Birdland Lake. Fishing is a popular pastime there, and it is reportedly stocked with Bluegill and Largemouth Bass. Also nearby is Terrace Park, a ten and a half acre park that features a playground, ball fields and basketball courts. Harold D. Lutz Sports Complex is within walking distance and features softball and baseball fields and Little League Baseball.
The historic Arvada Cemetery is in the northern portion of the neighborhood. It was simply known as “The Cemetery” when the area known as Arvada was settled in 1858. The first internment was a young child of one of the original residents, in 1862. The cemetery was officially platted in 1889.
