Jefferson County located in Arvada, Colorado is home to Allendale Area. The area has a rich history, dating back to the days of the “wild west.” Part of what formed Arvada’s history was the first discovery of gold on June 22, 1850.
At the heart of the Allendale Area is The Harold Lutz Sports Complex. Located at West 58th Avenue, between Miller and Oak Streets, the complex was originally created on land that was leased from State Home and Training School. The lease agreement went into place in 1969 and is valid for ninety-nine years. The lease agreement contains provisions that the annual lease payment be $400 with a percentage of concession sales also paid (between six and nine percent) for rent.
Although the original sports complex had four baseball fields and four football fields, it was actually unnamed. In 1981, during its 25th anniversary, the complex was named the Harold D. Lutz Sports Complex. The name was to honor the contributions of citizen Harold D. Lutz, an attorney who was largely responsible for organizing the North Jeffco Recreation and Park District in 1956. Today, the sports complex includes not only the original four baseball and four football fields, but thanks to the addition of thirteen additional acres of land, (made possible by Stan Lassak in 1993,) a batting cage as well as additional football fields have been added. One of the prize events at this complex includes the area’s Fourth of July celebration. During this celebration, a grandiose fireworks display highlights the festivities.
The Allendale area is dominated by the Harold D. Lutz Sports Complex which provides a variety of opportunities for non school-based sports and recreation for the residents in the Arvada area. This complex continues to thrive and is used extensively for non-sports activities, as well.
